We will look at examples of song lyrics from the early 20th century to now and what these lyrics are telling us about the society we live in.
SUMMARY:
This workshop is curated for the 2021 virtual conference engage: masculinity. patriarchy. feminism. In the workshop we look at what misogyny and sexism in music is, what messages are promoted through popular music and what these lyrics are telling us about the society we live in. The workshop will be run by Björn, co-founder of the Engage Conference.
We will be looking at songs from the start of the 20th century all the way to the present day across genres including pop, rock, metal and rap. We will consider how we can build awaness surroinding the views and messages we consume through music, why this is important and how we can change our consumption of damaging messages.
This workshop will include some discussion of offensive lyrics.
