#MenChallengingSexism23 Conference
We held our annual conference in Glasgow on 14 & 15 October and it was a great success. All the speakers delivered really insightful and engaging talks and Q&A sessions and we saw a really good increase in attendance compared to our 2022 conference. PETITIONING & OTHER SUPPORT
We signed a petition to the government to make the non-payment of child maintenance a criminal offence. At the moment it often takes months, sometimes years for payment to be enforced and that is simply not good enough!
We also signed a letter to the UN, asking for the working group behind the paper ‘Eliminating discrimination against sex workers and securing their human rights by the Working Group (WG) on discrimination against women and girls’ to be held to account.
Towards the end of the month, we also signed a petition calling upon the Government to not allow people to have acquired gender listed as sex on Government ID.
In addition to signing petitions and letters, we also made a few donations to causes close to our heart. We made a donation to a fundraiser aiming to hold NHS England to account for unsafe treatment for young people with gender dysphoria and also made a small donation to Not Buying It, to help them continue their legal proceedings against the National Police Chief’s Council, whose new Police Guidance on ‘Sex Work’ appears to have been developed with significant input from pro-pimp organisations.
We also made a small donation to help Jenny Watson crowdfund Jenny’s Bar. Following actions that have disrupted and attempted to shut down Watson’s lesbian speed dating events, she is now attempting to set up a lesbian bar by raising £100k.
NEXT DISCUSSION GROUP MEETING
As mentioned in our September update, our discussion group did not meet in October due to our conference taking place. The next meeting will take place on 15 or 16 November 2023 and will be reading and discussing Hags by Victoria Smith.
